Let’s Tie the Knot

Look, if you’re going to get tied down at least do it fashionably…

It’s never too hot for me to slip into a scarf. But like any pairing worth maintaining, a girl has got to stray away from the mundane! I like to mix it up. Here are a few of my favorite ways to get tied down.

Image

The Muffler

It’s hot outside, you guys! Let’s keep fabric to a minimum. And if the heat has you too flustered, the Muffler is great because it only requires two steps. Fold a square scarf into a triangle. Drape it over your chest and tie it behind your neck. Boom! Like my kitty? I got this beast from the Peach Pit Vintage booth at Bad Granny’s Bazaar in the Plaza District. Meow!

Image

The Mod Muffler

This is a modern spin on The Muffler. Designed by the fabulously fierce Karli Alfson, this scarf is a stunner. Simply unclasp the scarf and wrap it around your neck. Lift up the first layer and clasp, cleverly hiding the hardware. Reposition the top layer over the clasp and do your best strut. You fancy, huh? (Psst… Love this scarf? Too bad! It’s the only one! Fortunately, Karli will make you one just a fabulous!)

Image

Infinity Double Loop

When I first moved to OKC, I discovered the Plaza District. Inside DNA Galleries, I also discovered my first girl crush. Her name is Shanna and she’s kind of a big deal. What does this have to do with scarves? Shanna Banana infinity scarves! They can be found at DNA, Blue Seven or on her Etsy. This is the first infinity scarf I purchased, and it’s kinda my jam. Place the infinity scarf around your neck with the inseam facing the back. Make a figure 8 in the front and put the bottom loop over your head. Adjust those loops to your liking and you’re good to go.

Image

Infinity Tripe Loop

It’s like the double… just add a loop. You know, for those who really like to be tied down. (And in case you’re wondering…This is also a Shanna Banana creation).

Image

Slip Knot

In the fall and winter, this is always my go-to tie. It’s perfect for longer and thicker scarves, like the magenta beauty pictured above from Aldo. Simply fold your scarf in half, wrap it around your neck and pull both ends of the scarf through the loop. Adjust the knot and you’re ready to go!

Image

The Knot-tie Knot

Let’s get a little knot-tie. Drape the scarf around your neck (I used one I got from Gap). Wrap each end around your neck, in opposite directions. Pull down the fabric touching your neck and make a figure 8. Then take each scarf end and pull through the loop, layering each end through the figure 8 you created. I like to leave one of the ends tucked through the loop and the other draped over. Sounds a bit tricky, but worth the end product.

Now, who said being tied down is boring?

Rosé, I Love Your Delicate Way

Recently one of my friends asked me what my “personal style” was, and after stammering and thinking of some fashion diction that might impress the crowd, I realized I couldn’t explain it with words.
I work with colors, shapes, moods, feelings, movement, and texture. Every morning I get inspired by a song, or a picture on instagram for what my #ootd will be. Every morning I look at my schedule to figure out what my personality I will be that day, what role I’ll play in society today.
Today one of my tasks was to explore the city looking for a beautiful garden to shoot in. I rarely wear pink, but was inspired to do so. My philosophical thoughts on pink led me to look up an old song by The Feeling.
My dream outfit keeps my legs open to the public, has comfortable shoes, and long sleeves. These are the things that make me happy. This is what I would have worn today if the internet was my closet. Roseh
My dream music has a powerful piano, beautiful lyrics, and verse I can put all my emotions into (my dsahboard). Here is what I’ve been listening to all day.

I will always and forever be a fan of black: black slacks, black shoes, black sunglasses, The Black Keys, black eyeliner, black cars…….  This summer, I’m having withdrawals from my go-to black tights.  Everything seems so loud, so bright, so….short (crop tops anyone?).  Not to mention, if you wear a bright orange dress every week, people will notice.  Working with a receptionist’s salary has taught me that black is my friend.  I can wear the same black pants 3 days a week and appear classic and demure. Now, while I would kill for a hot pink pencil skirt, I would be a fool to think that I could use it as a staple in my closet.
I’ve researched some black items that are anything but wintery.  Pinafore dresses are playful, feminine and are a relative of this year’s famous overalls.  Pair it with a sheer button-down, some open-toed platforms, and you’re a little less Alice and a bit more….I dont know, 20-something years old. These Foxy Platforms by Jeffrey Campbell are my absolute favorite shoes this summer.  I like to think of them as The Lita Convertable.  I also think you can do no wrong with liquid eyeliner and a nude lip any time of year.  Just stay away from braiding you hair….unless you’re part of the Adams Family.

The Clad Stache. Bow ties Taylor made for you.

Recently, I met a man about a bow tie.

But not just any bow tie, we’re talking about a bow tie tailored to one man’s dream. And to be honest, his bow ties are all I’ve been dreaming about lately.

Image

Look, I know there’s a stupid grin on my face. But can you blame me? Look at that bow tie, made just for me! It’s pretty much the best day of my life…

Image

Diamond point and reversible?!? No, no… just let that sink in for a minute.

The Clad Stache officially launched at the beginning of this year on Etsy and Instagram, but Taylor Hanna’s romance with bow ties has been long in the making. And let’s just say it wasn’t exactly love at first sight.

As a kid, Taylor’s dad always wore bow ties.  It was only natural that Taylor wanted nothing to do with them. But all of that changed four years ago, when he found himself in a bit of a bind.

“My wife and I were swimming at my parents’ house and we had a wedding to go to,” recalled Taylor. “We kind of got stuck out at the pool a little longer than we thought…So, I’m getting cleaned up and changed and I’m completely dressed, but I had no tie on.”

Taylor had accidentally left his necktie at home. Fortunately, his dad came to the rescue–bow tie in hand.

“I thought, ‘Whatever, it’s a stupid bow tie. I’m not going to put that on,’” said Taylor. “I told him, ‘I don’t even know how to tie it.’ He had quit wearing them for like two years, so he was out of practice and we ended up having this whole ordeal where he’s trying to tie it on me.”

After several attempts, Taylor finally fashioned the bow tie around his neck. It was love at first tie.

“As soon as I put it on, I completely fell in love with it,” said Taylor. “Right from the get go I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, I can’t tell my Dad I absolutely love this, because I’ve given him a hard time ever since I was a little kid for wearing these stupid bow ties!’ But, I loved it–End of story.”

But there was just one problem–Taylor never seemed to find any bow ties he liked. When he got the idea to have a custom bow tie made from two separate fabrics, he realized it would be much easier to just create a Taylor-made bow tie. So for his birthday, Taylor found himself asking the man in a bow tie for a sewing machine, to make (you guessed it) bow ties.

“Are you kidding me?” replied Taylor’s dad in disbelief. “You’ve given me a hard time about this for 20-something years!”

Image

But Taylor wasn’t kidding and thus began the creation of The Clad Stache. And while sewing may not seem to be the manliest of pursuits, Taylor definitely took the manliest approach.

“I tore up old tee shirts and taught myself how to sew,” explained Taylor. “I finally got the nerve to try and actually sew a bow tie.”

But first, he needed to make a stencil for a bow tie pattern.

“So I go into the garage and find this old cardboard box and I literally just cut it out and started on it,” recalled Taylor. “And of course, it’s all jiggity and jaggedy. No duct tape involved, though I wish there was. So my wife comes in from working, I’m sitting there with this cardboard.”

“You drew your pattern on cardboard,” Jennifer Hanna asked her husband, in disbelief.

“Well yeah, I didn’t have anything else to do it with,” replied Taylor.

“Why didn’t you just use a piece of paper,” she asked.

“It’s not stiff enough,” he answered.

Currently, Taylor uses two paper stencils for his bow ties (because he may be the bow tie man, but behind every great bow tie is a woman who was right). His cardboard mencil (that’s short for men’s stencil) may not have made the cut, but Taylor’s managed to find some use for it. The front of his business card/logo resembles shredded cardboard.

Image

The Clad Stache bow ties can be tied four different ways! Magic, right?

But Jennifer Hanna wasn’t just right about the stencils. She was also right in always supporting Taylor’s dreams. It was her idea for Taylor to quit his job and pursue The Clad Stache, full time.

“She’s always pushed me and I’m kind of a scaredy cat and get a bit nervous,” said Taylor. “I get nervous about my stuff. I’m confident in the fabrics that I put together and everything like that, but I still get nervous because I know that my stuff is different.”

Image

The Mr. Mister and James bow ties were both inspired by two of Taylor’s closest friends and inspirations.

I always was a seersucker…

Blue Seven recently started selling The Clad Stache, and since then Taylor has been dodging seeing anyone sporting one of his bow ties around town.

“I’m the last person to judge somebody, so it has nothing to do with me seeing a bow tie on somebody,” said Taylor. “It just makes it real. And that’s kind of what I’m scared of. It actually being real.”

But The Clad Stache has become very real. Currently, Taylor is working on orders from all over the country, including orders from overseas. The official Clad Stache website (TheCladStache.com) is set to launch within the next month and will feature an upcoming vintage line created from repurposed vintage materials. The site will also feature bow ties just for kids!

Taylor is also in talks with several local retail shops about adding The Clad Stache to their lineup. View The Clad Stache’s complete line here or contact Taylor Hanna directly at TheCladStache@gmail.com to place a custom order.

Besides bow ties, Taylor is really into taxidermy. Say hello to his friend and office mate, Bobby (He also goes by just Bob, according to Taylor’s two daughters). Bob is modeling my custom-made Clad Stache. Who do you think wore it best?

God Bless Rompers & Top Buns.

Let’s be honest, ladies, we don’t actually like to spend time getting ready. I take that back – we don’t like to spend more than 30 minutes getting ready if we can help it. Not to mention, it’s the middle of an Oklahoma summer. That means the combination of a hot blow dryer and blinding bathroom lights makes getting ready that much more tedious. Don’t get me wrong – pampering and beautifying can be a lot of fun. Like when you completely restock all your make up and splurge on expensive hair products. Y’all know what I’m talking about. But sometimes you just need a few short cuts. That’s why God created brilliant designers who invented rompers and the genius hair stylists who pulled together top buns.

Think about it. What’s more convenient that a onesie? Just step in, zip up and you’re ready to party. You’ve got the comfort of shorts and a top in the structure of a cute dress. And depending on the fabric and how you accessorize, you’ve got an outfit classy enough for a fancy dinner. And believe me, I understand the whole “rompers are unflattering” mindset. I used to think the same thing until I realized how belts can make miracles, too. If you have a romper that makes you shapeless and boxy, add a thin belt around your waist and witness instant structure. Give it a try. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. And, as always, don’t forget to accessorize. Add a few oversized rings to make your new look a funky one. Slip into some wedges to lengthen your legs and dress up the romper.

In my opinion (or maybe it’s just a desperate hope), top buns will never go out of style. They’re our little secret. Having a bad hair day? No worries, just throw that mess into a smooth top bun and no one ever has to know your hair struggles. Run out of time to spend an hour washing and fixing your hair? Don’t fret. The top bun is here to save the day. Seriously, I couldn’t count how many times I resort to the top bun because no other hair style is working. And the best part: it’s actually flattering. Pulling your hair up and away from your face instantly brightens your look and takes weight away from your face. It helps you look more polished and pulled together (even if you’re not).

To all the ladies out there who rely on short cuts: carry on because no one has to know. Ever.

Accessorizing Marfa-Style

Image

I have been craving a summer vacation, especially the isolated, artistic desert town called Marfa, TX.   A touristy spot in the middle of nowhere, Marfa caters to the open-minded and adventurous.  Although, I haven’t been able to get the courage for the 12+ hour drive, a girl can dream.  I have found some Marfa-inspired accessories to quench my Southwest thirst.    They’re not only applicable for looking stylish on a road trip; They can help you stay cool and look cool in the summer heat. Image

Have a happy summer vacation!

Bring It On July!

Summer 2013 is officially here! It’s that time of year for holidays, BBQS, and fun times. I’m feeling very inspired by some looks @ Coachella this year. Coachella is not only one of the biggest music festivals, it is a fashion frenzy of hippy chic summer looks.

Image

I mean  did you see  Ireland Baldwin @ Coachella? Ireland’s look @Coachella screams BRING IT ON SUMMER! So I decided to hit up the thrift stores in OKC to recreate this look for super cheap and still be super chic!

First I went out and bought a plain white T for .99 cents. Next I found some really cute high wasted jeans for 4$. Then I went searching for the right shoes. In Ireland’s look she rocked a cute military style boot, but here in OK that could get pretty hot! So I went with a nice pair of reddish leather boots with a woven toe.
Image
I created this complete outfit by thrifting, and DIY. To get inspired for your t-shirt and short cutting ideas, I always hit up Pinterest. Pinterest will always give you more inspiration than you know what to do with! The styles I chose you can see in my photos through out my blog. I just followed a few simple steps for my t-shirt cuts, and then embellished the fringe I made with some wooden vintage beads I picked up from a friend, to add detail. Then I simply cut the high wasted jeans to a desired length, and added stripes to the inside pockets with tape and red fabric paint. I also studded the front pockets and back pockets to give the shorts a little edge. Who knew studs would be so easy:)
Image
For all of your accessory needs call on your own closet, friends, and family. For instance I used some old leather scraps to make the headband, which I just braided together and fit to my models head. Then had my model shop in her closet to get the soccer socks we used, and all of her accessories.

If you want to know more about how I created this look from the clothes, hair, and makeup please leave a comment!
I’ll leave you with some fun photos from our shoot! I want to say a special thanks to my model Amber Herring, and my photograper Kelsey Hassler! You girls rock!!
XOXO,
